Expect the best meteor shower of 2020 with the Geminids
Oregon has some of the largest expanses of dark skies in the US. Photographers come from around the world to capture the infamous shot of Mt Hood and the Milky Way. Dave Muller, a guest at the Old Parkdale Inn gave permission to share his capture.
With our large expanse of dark skies comes the opportunity to observe some spectacular meteor showers also.
The Geminids will be the best meteor shower of 2020. The Geminids occur every year from about December 4 to 16, peaking the night of December 13 into the morning of December 14th, with as many as 75 meteors per hour. Though it’s a chilly time in the Northern Hemisphere, the Geminids will peak at an ideal time, just one day after the new moon.
Ursids: Next period of activity: December 17th, 2020 to December 26th, 2020. The Ursids meteor shower usually peaks around December 23. At its peak, observers may be able to view as many as 10 meteors in an hour.

Hospitality Update: A two-week freeze was announced by our governor, Governor Brown on November 18th. These new measures were intended to limit group activities and stop the rapid spread of COVID-19 across Oregon. The Two-Week Freeze measures will be in effect from Nov. 18 through Dec. 2, state-wide. On November 30, the Oregon Health Authority will reexamine county data to determine which counties qualify for each risk level on December 3, following the end of the 2-Week Freeze.
